GRAMMAR didn’t invent the classic white button-down shirt. It merely perfected it.

GRAMMAR founder and designer, Althea Simons
What could be more emblematic of a fresh start—a blank page—than the quintessential white button-down shirt? When designer Althea Simons’ apartment building burned down, along with all her belongings, the term “wardrobe-building” took on a new sense of urgency. Starting from the ground up—aka, the fundamentals—Simons found such foundational garments surprisingly difficult to come by. So, starting from scratch once again, Simons launched GRAMMAR in 2017, comprising a trim lineup of lasting wardrobe essentials.
But don’t be fooled by the all-caps name. This is not a brand that screams anything, and that’s the point. Designed with modern minimalists in mind, GRAMMAR’s understated pieces eschew timely trends to confidently ensure nothing ever goes out of style.
What began with a crisp, white poplin button-down has since expanded to include a wider range of fabrics like chambray, flannel, even corduroy, and styles that include shirt-dresses, tunics, cropped trousers, and a rather dashing trench coat we can’t stop dreaming about, all of which are made with 100-percent organic cotton and produced in New York City’s garment district. While it’s true that less isn’t always best, sometimes possessing something in its finest form eliminates the desire for anything else. We’d say that kind of elemental luxury absolutely merits an exuberant shout or two.
